It’s impossible to know this chair’s path through the centuries but its current owner took possession in the 1970’s and has been using it ever since.
In the early 20th century the chair was modified to accept upholstery. Prior to that the frame would have had a leather sling seat. There’s evidence of that early seat on the front posts.
The brass medallions are sand cast. Each being not quite completely similar to the next. Imperfect and perfect. Remnants of handwork from renaissance era Spain.
We gave the frame an oil wash. It’s one of our shop formulations that cleans surfaces and tints damage but doesn’t obscure the old varnish or years of acquired use. For upholstery, we started with a new foundation, then padded with horse hair. The fabric was chosen by the client.
